Of family histories
Seventh generation Australian, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has been presented with a detailed history of his ancestors, who included convicts (one of the earliest was a 12-old-girl, Mary Wade, who arrived on the Second Fleet) and free settlers. Researching family histories has become an increasingly popular pastime in Australia. Have you done so? What do you know about your families past and have you ever unearthed any skeletons in the closet? Is it important to our own identity to know about our past?

Australia 2020 Summit
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced a summit will be held in April to be attended by 1000 of Australia's "best and brightest" who will propose and discuss ideas addressing some of the challenges facing the nation. He recently named the 11 people on the steering committe. They include: Tim Fischer, former deputy prime minister; Glyn Davis, vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne; Cate Blanchett, actress; Warwick Smith, former Liberal MP and banker; Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision Australia; John Hartigan, chairman of News Ltd; David Morgan, former CEO of Westpac; Dr Kelvin Kong, Australia's first indigenous surgeon; Roger Beale, senior associate with the Allen Consulting Group; Professor Michael Good, director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research; and Professor Michael Wesley, director of the Griffith Asia Institute.

The new Seven Deadly Sins
The Vatican have unveiled a new list of seven deadly sins for the modern era - genetic modification, experiments on humans, pollution, causing social injustice, causing poverty, taking drugs, obscene wealth - to join the original seven deadly sins - lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride - defined by Gregory the Great in the sixth century. Do you think such lists are useful? Are these 'new' sins or simply different expressions of the same sins humans have always been committing?

Further to our discussion on Australian values, below, the Australian Government has proposed aspiring citizens take a test to see what they know of the Australian way of life and our "shared values" (as well as a basic knowledge of English). The Government has said aspiring Australian's needn't know Bradman's batting average but should know what Gallipoli means. What are some of the questions you think should be on the test?

R rating for smoking?
The Motion Picture Association of America's rating board is considering including depictions of smoking among the criteria which decide a film's rating with designations such as "glamorised smoking" and "pervasive smoking". What do you think? Should Australia including information about depictions of smoking in our ratings? Is smoking even a problem in film?

Adopting children from developing countries
Madonna has caused an uproar in recent days - this time for the adoption of a 13-month-old boy from the African nation of Malawi. It raises the broader question of what do you think about people from the West adopting children in developing nations. Is it a matter of looking at individual circumstances or should blanket bans apply? Should it be discouraged or can rules such requiring prospective parents to live in the child's country for a set time, properly govern such adoptions? What are the pros and cons?

Saddam Hussein's death
The Iraqi government have confirmed that Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging in Iraq in the early hours of 30th December. His death has been welcomed by many, but also prompted criticism from some quarters surrounding the fact that he was executed at all and the fairness of his trial. Christians all over the world are taking part in the 40 period prior to Easter known as Lent. While traditionally, the Lenten period was marked by increased prayer, fasting and alms-giving, many Christians today take part by giving up something they enjoy to better focus their minds on such things as prayer. Family First's
Family First have released a 10 point plan to counter Australia's "drinking problem". It includes putting warning labels on alcohol, a zero blood alcohol level for all Australian drivers under 25 years, greater restrictions on alcohol advertising and an investigation surrounding the possibility of raising the age for purchasing alcohol to 20. NT Aborigines living in remote areas face new controls to stem child abuse
The Federal Government has announced it will subject indigenous people living in remote communities in the Northern Territory to a range of new controls in a bid to stop the sexual abuse of children - what the Prime Minister John Howard has described as a "national emergency". They include the banning of alcohol and pornography, welfare payments being made conditional on school attendance and child health, and the right for authorities to demand child health checks. What do you think?
